Simorgh

ISA / Iran

Iran's heaviest orbital launch vehicle, with a turbulent development history and modest success rate.

Simorgh (Phoenix) is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle developed by the Iranian Space Agency. It is considerably larger than Iran's earlier Safir rocket and uses a cluster of four Nodong-derived engines in its first stage. After multiple failures, Simorgh successfully placed two satellites into orbit in 2023, demonstrating Iran's growing space launch capability.

Fun facts
Simorgh's first stage uses a cluster of four engines derived from North Korean Nodong missiles.
After years of failures, Iran successfully demonstrated orbital capability with Simorgh in 2023.
Simorgh means 'phoenix' in Persian — reflecting the rocket's repeated attempts to rise after failures.
