China's heavy-lift workhorse — launched Tianwen-1 to Mars and the Tiangong space station modules.
Long March 5 (CZ-5) is China's largest operational rocket, using kerolox boosters and a hydrolox core. It has launched the Chang'e lunar sample return missions, the Tianwen-1 Mars mission, and the modules of the Tiangong space station. After a failure on its second flight in 2017, an extensive redesign returned the rocket to flight in 2019.
Fun facts
Long March 5 launched all modules of China's Tiangong space station into orbit.
After a catastrophic engine failure on its second flight in 2017, China spent 2.5 years diagnosing and fixing the YF-77 engine.
Long March 5 is China's first rocket with a hydrogen-oxygen core stage — common in European and American rockets.
